DETROIT — The startup Detroit Electric unveiled its first model Wednesday – a $135,000 all-electric sports car.

The company says its SP:01 will be a limited-edition two-seat electric sports car that will hit zero to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and max out at 155 mph.

Its mid-mounted electric motor will generate 201 hp and 166 foot-pounds of torque.

And the company says the range from a single charge will exceed 180 miles, with a recharge time of just over four hours.

Thanks to a lightweight battery pack and carbon-fiber body, the car will weigh just 2,354 pounds. It also is to feature advanced smartphone applications, as well as advanced braking and stability control.

The company says production will start in August.

The new SP:01 was launched under the brand’s mantra of ‘Pure Electric Excitement’ at Detroit Electric’s new headquarters in the Fisher Building in downtown Detroit.

The company says just 999 SP:01′s will be built at the company’s new production plant in Wayne County.

Detroit Electric was founded more than five years ago and faces competition from Fisker and Tesla. It is led by former Lotus Engineering CEO Albert Lam.

Each SP:01 will come with a three-year, 30,000-mile warranty with an optional extension for the battery to five years and 50,000 miles.
